Session Progress, usually with SDP: the network sends audio before the call is answered (ringback, announcements, IVR).

When it happens

  • Carriers play their own ringback or "the number is unavailable" messages.
  • IVRs and voicemail answer with early media.

What to check

  • No sound during 183 usually means RTP is blocked by NAT or a firewall: the same problem will show up after the answer.
