How it is measured
Browsers cannot send ICMP ping, so we send tiny HTTPS requests to each region's public endpoint. The first request opens the connection (DNS, TCP, TLS) and is not counted. The next five reuse it and take about one round trip each, which is the ping. We show the median and the average change between consecutive samples.
What delay you need
- VoIP: keep the PBX under about 80 ms round trip, or with the carrier's own delay conversations start to lag.
- VPN: up to 100 ms is barely noticeable for work and browsing; for gaming and calls, lower is better.
- Sites and APIs: what matters is the delay to your users, not to you. Ask someone in the target country to open this page.
