DNS speed test

Compare Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google 8.8.8.8, Quad9, AdGuard, Yandex DNS and others from your network: response time for popular and fresh names, a ranking, and how to set it on a router, Windows, Android and iPhone.

The test runs from your browser over DNS over HTTPS (as Chrome and Firefox do with Secure DNS). “Popular names” are already in the resolver’s cache, so they show the plain delay to it. “Uncached names” are random, so the resolver looks them up from scratch. Figures are a little higher than classic UDP DNS, but the order is the same.

How to change DNS

  • Router — best: one change for every device. MikroTik: /ip dns set servers=1.1.1.1,8.8.8.8 and hand out the router’s address via DHCP. Keenetic: Internet → your connection → DNS servers.
  • Windows — Settings → Network & internet → your connection → DNS server assignment → Manual. Windows 11 can turn on DoH there too.
  • Android — Settings → Network → Private DNS, with the host name from the DoT column (for example dns.google).
  • iPhone, Mac — for Wi-Fi: Settings → Wi-Fi → (i) → Configure DNS → Manual. For all networks, install the service’s DoH profile (Cloudflare, AdGuard, NextDNS have one).

Why your ISP’s DNS can be faster

Your ISP’s resolver is the closest, but it is not in the test because the browser does not know its DoH address. If the best public resolvers show more than 40–50 ms, the ISP one may be faster, though it is more likely to rewrite answers or block sites. CDNs matter too: some resolvers point you at a nearer server of a site (ECS), so equal DNS speed does not mean equal page speed.

See what different resolvers answer for your domain: DNS propagation. Delay to clouds: cloud ping. Line speed: speed test.
