Smart home

Home Assistant with Docker Compose

Build a docker-compose.yml for a smart home: Home Assistant, Mosquitto, Zigbee2MQTT, ESPHome, Node-RED and Frigate, with the right networking, volumes, time zone and Zigbee stick passthrough.

Services

Everything is built in the browser: passwords and addresses are not sent anywhere.

Starting it

  1. Save the file in an empty folder such as ~/smarthome and run docker compose up -d.
  2. For Mosquitto put a config in ./mosquitto/config/mosquitto.conf: Mosquitto generator; without one the broker only accepts local connections.
  3. For Zigbee2MQTT, ./zigbee2mqtt/configuration.yaml: Zigbee2MQTT generator. Inside the container the stick is /dev/ttyACM0.
  4. Home Assistant is at http://server-ip:8123, Zigbee2MQTT at :8080, Node-RED at :1880, Frigate at :5000.

Home Assistant and ESPHome use host networking (network_mode: host) so device discovery (mDNS, Bluetooth) works. Docker has no add-ons or built-in updates like Home Assistant OS: update with docker compose pull && docker compose up -d.
