What to choose
- RAID 1 / mirror: two disks, simple and reliable; often the best choice for a home server.
- RAID 5 / RAIDZ1: space-efficient, but with 8 TB+ disks a rebuild takes a day or more, and a second failure in that window loses the array.
- RAID 6 / RAIDZ2: survives two failed disks; the sensible minimum for 5 or more large disks.
- RAID 10 / ZFS mirrors: fastest for VMs and databases, at the cost of half the space.
Vendors count terabytes in powers of 1000; the OS shows tebibytes in 1024s, so “8 TB” appears as 7.3 TiB. ZFS also keeps about 3 % in reserve. RAID is not a backup: only a copy on another device protects against deleted files and ransomware.
